Installed a new single lever kitchen faucet and shut off valves. Every time we use it there is a thumping sound. Been doing it for 2 days. If I remove the aerator the sound disappears. Tried the old aerator with the same result. There seems to be more thumps after it sits for a few minutes and very few immediately after using it. Sounds like this

Probably the sprayer's diverter. The sprayer may be leaking so it does not retain water in it, then when you turn the faucet on, it doesn't know whether to operate the sprayer or the spout. The noise is the diverter "filling", and "refilling" the hose to maintain pressure in it.

Thanks for the quick reply. So did I do something wrong or is this faucet defective?

Also the thump doesn't happen until its raised about halfway

possibly neither. Does the flow pulsate in time with the thumps? You may need a new spray unit, diverter, or faucet, or it might just need to be taken apart and cleaned out after some dirt got stuck in the diverter.

If you mean does the water coming out of the faucet pulsate in time with the thumps - YES

I guess I'll take it apart, Thanks

After you remove the spout the diverter is a "round" thing in the front of the faucet. You have to pull it out of the faucet body.
Do I need a special tool? nothing to grab on to

When I turn off the spray sounds the same as the thump, no aerator no thump

Ah! Those "nice new" all plastic faucets, a.k.a. P.o.S. You should be able to remove it by pulling on that center "button",
Yeah, it is a POS, you get what you pay for and it was all my parents would spend. The old delta I removed weighed about 5 times as much as the new one.
The center button was the first thing I tried, didn't want to yank too hard, tried to unscrew it but that didn't work.

I'll give it a good yank a little later and see what I get.

Got a reply from Delta concerning "no aerator = no thump" told me soak it in vinegar ;)

Thanks for your time

After talking to Delta support, I inserted a small allen wrench into a hole in the cup that holds the ball assembly and wiggled out the diverter. Looking at the diverter I could have probably pulled it right out, Anyway, with the guy on the phone I flushed it out and ended up right where I started. Sending me a new diverter 10-14 days. I have no idea what a working diverter looks like so I can’t say if it was faulty. I guess we’ll see.

Thanks Again

Until you get the new one, remove the diverter. All that will happen is that you will have water flowing from the hose and the spout as the same time when you use the hose, (which few people do anyway).

Boy is this turning into a Royal PITA

Installed the new diverter today, no change, thump thump thump

No aerator no thump - Using the spray no thump until I release the spray button then multiple thumps which seems to be new, the multiple thumps

Was trying to identify “where†the thumps were happening. Hand held various points, supply lines, shutoff valves etc. Strongest on the faucet body, spout and spray.
They are sending a new aerator. I told her the old Delta aerator also thumped in the new faucet. She said the insides of the aerator is loose and is vibrating back and forth.
Just about ready to return it to Lowes

Happy Holidays everyone and thanks for the help

PS pulling the old diverter by the "button" worked just fine

OK, so the new aerator arrived today, installed it and thump, thump, thump, thump. I explained to them the last time I called that the old Delta aerator (which worked fine on the old faucet) didn't solve the thump but they wouldn't listen. Today they offered to send a new spray unit, I told them I'm pulling the Delta and getting a different brand. Its going back to Lowes.

To be fair, Delta Customer support was always very nice and accommodating but I’ve had it with this faucet.

I wrote a letter to Delta HQ explaining my displeasure. Delta called a few days later saying the faucet I have is a relatively new model, offered a new faucet of a different design. I decided to try the last box on Delta’s problem resolution chart before going through the extra work of pulling the faucet off. The new spray unit arrived today, thump, thump, thump.

Delta is sending a new faucet.
