Thread: Turn off well pump during periods of freezing weather?

Default Turn off well pump during periods of freezing weather?

We've just completed our cabin in the woods, including a new well. The only part of the cabin we plan on heating is the bathroom and utility room, the only areas with water piping. I'm confident in the electric heat in these two rooms, but am curious if it would be wise to depressurize the system if we are going to be absent for a long period of time. In other words, is an unpressurized system any less likely to suffer damage in case of freezing weather?

    Thanks!

While you may be confident in your heat in these 2 rooms, how sure are you that you won't have any long power interuptions (storms, lightning, etc) ??
Your best bet is to shut the pump down, drain the tank and all lines, etc.
Then you do'nt have to worry, and it could prevent a costly fix come the Spring.
