It will depend on the jurisdiction you live in. Where I live all utilities must be 10' apart. I have done waste line replacements on very old homes where the water line was 1" under the waste line all the way from the street to the house.

Is it permissable to run black iron for natural gas and copper for water in the same trench? How deep? Are there any restrictions? Thanks, Doc

I don't think so.
The gas line needs to be a coated line if it's to be buried too.
I've never seen them run in the same ditch.
Here in North Carolina each utilties must have it's own ditch, with at least a foot spread.
