Flange 1" too low with a tile floor

I very much doubt the addition of spacers is to blame for the sound although the materials, length, turns, and position of the vent are all possible factors. Consider yourself lucky that you got a deep throated sound for such little cost. Ford spent millions in acoustical engineering to give their trucks that sound.
