That is the textbook way and sounds too simple to miss so I'm thinking there is more to it than we've been told. Maybe Tim is trying to do an S trap?

Since pedestal sinks typically have a very narrow opening for the drain, your options as far as how far you can offset it laterally are usually VERY limited, without actually relocating the drain line in the wall.
