i need to replace an old kitchenaid hot water dispenser.
insinkerator seems to be popular, but gets horrible reviews...mostly due to the plastic
storage tank. if i specify a stainless steel tank, will insinkerator be ok...or should i go
with a kitchenaid again?

Kitchenaid and Insinkerator are the same thing.
The newer Insinkerator uses the new stainless tank. The old models had tanks that would fail at eight years.
