Power surge through HDMI?

Is it possible for a power surge to come in through the HDMI port of a Fios top box, pass through to the tv attached to it and an X-Box connected to the tv, and burn out the HDMI ports on the 3 devises but still have the devises working? If so, what can be done to repair the HDMI ports on each devise, or at least the tv and X-Box?

Any wire has the capability of carrying current, including HDMI cable.

Under normal operation all AC power should be on the AC line and not the Video connections.

When a device fails, then many times the devices MOV puts a direct short across the AC line input, and blows the device fuse.

When you add a set-top Box with a cable or Ethernet connection then power will complete a ground path thru any possible path that it can find, Video, RF, Phone lines. Ground Loops are very common with things connected from multiple locations.

You may want to power down your HDMI switcher completely and see if it will reset, maybe it got stupid.

All devices connected together should be on the same AC circuit if possible, and a Three-Way surge protector should be used on all devices.


If the devices power on, then the built in MOV and fuse is still good, If the HDMI port is damaged, then repairing it would depend on the unit itself.

Power surge possible but not likely if the stuff still works. A power surge would first burn out the power supply in the devise that got the surge. Static discharge more likely but still very rare to say yes definitely. Repairing hdmi input likely not a cost effective repair on the x box exceeding the worth of the unit. Tv would involve replacing the signal board and cost will vary between $200-$300 guess without knowing what tv you got.

A lightning strike to a rooftop antennae, which did NOT have a lightning arrestor, could come down the signal line into the devices, but then it would be likely that any affected devices would have burned out rather than just damage the HDMI ports.
