Default American Standard Deep Soak Drain

Has anyone had any experience with the American Standard Deep Soak Bathtub Drain? It looks good (raises the water level by a couple of inches) but it's all plastic and doesn't look like it's worth it ($120+ retail). Is there anything else similar that may be made better?

It does not give much information, although it looks like it has to work by letting the overflow water in at the top of the plate, but it also says it was designed to work with their Evolution series of fixtures, so it might not fit generically on every tub. One problem might be if a tub has a rounded surface so it would not seal.

One thing to be very careful of is that deep water in the tub means little room at the top for a 'wave'. Move a little, and you could have a big volume of water that now is on the floor outside of the tub. There's a reason they put the overflow where they do. Proceed with caution...
