    Default Availability question

    My home was built in the 70's and has the inside unit (Carrier) installed above the bathtub with a drop down door for access and the condensing unit outside. Is this type unit still available and what is it called?

    Welcome to Terry's Forums TIFFSDAD;

    Yes they still make that type, Split System.

    You may want to checkout a Goodman, They are made in Houston.

    You may have to go thru a dealer, They come Pre-charged.

    Have a great day.

    Don't pay someone to do a job fast, when you can do a half-fast job yourself.

    Yes it is still available. It is called a ceiling mount or fur down unit. Generically, it is also called a fan coil unit.

    One big issue with these is the SEER change. Your unit is 10 SEER, at best, possbily less. If you have to replace the outdoor unit, it will be 13 SEER. It is possible for a good HVAC tech to make that work. The bigger issue is size. A replacement 13 SEER fan coil will probably be 6" wider than your current unit, and that is not easily accomodated. In fact, it would be a MAJOR deal.
    As I mentioned, it is not legal to produce 10 SEER condensers, most of the manufacturers only make 13 SEETR and up on their inside line. HOWEVER, First Company still produces 10 SEER fancoil units, for just the reasons I have explained.

    Looky here: http://www.firstco.com/products/hx.asp

    The even numbers ( 18, 24, 36 etc) are 10 SEER. The odd numbers ( 19,25, etc) are 13 SEER.
