Hi all,

The toilet on the ground floor of our house has been backing up 3-4 times a week for a month now.

This Sunday , it would not unclog and we noticed that when we flushed the two toilets on the upper level, the lower level toilet would fill up with brackish water. We called a plumber this morning, but the soonest they can get to us is tomorrow afternoon.

Tonight, the toilet exploded waste water over a 8 ft diameter area. My husband keeps flushing this backed up toilet, in hope of "clearing it". He's flushed it twice since the explosion.

So, what is going on? Main line issue? Also, should we cease using any toilet in our house? Is my husband "1 beer short of a six pack" for repeatedly flushing a broken toilet? I keep telling him to leave it alone, as it looks like a big problem that flushing won't fix it, but he's being stubborn.

I don't want to know how to fix it, I will pay a professional for that tomorrow Basically, I need some advice/info tonight before my better half does something, well...stupid. ;)

Thanks,
K

It's too late to prevent him from doing something stupid. You won't unclog the main line by flushing the toilet. Period.

Once the line has been rodded out, you should find that there is nothing wrong with your toilets.

Hello Kim3, Welcome to Terry's Forums.

Give your husband another beer and tell him to pee in the back yard, until you get the problem fixed.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It IS possible that the stoppage might clear itself "temporarily" if he keeps the line full of water, but in most cases all he is doing is reinforcing the stoppage. A plumber with a snake is the ONLY solution, so either wait until he can get to you or call one who can come faster. I NEVER make someone with a plugged sewer wait two days before I fix it.
