I am sure if we all looked into our lives we could find something to be thankful for. I am thankful for my family. I have great kids with loving hearts, good sense of humors and ready to help anyone, I am thankful for the people they have become. I am thankful that I will celebrate this day without having to undergo chemo, that is a real plus, and it gives me hope for the bigger holiday, Xmas, that is coming. I am thankful for the roof over my head, even though it is a struggle alone to pay for it, I am thankful I am able to do it. I am thankful I have an income which provides the shelter, food and other essentials in life. I am thankful for those in my life I once had and lost to illness, I am thankful for my good friends, to a rather grumpy employer because she can sometimes look the other way when I need a day off, and I am thankful for my 2 cats who make me laugh even when I don't want to. I am thankful for even the tough times, for without those times, I wouldn't know the good ones.

I am wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, a day filled with love, peace and happiness.

I am surprised that no one has anything to be grateful for that they could put here. But, I will tell you something about this morning. At 10 am, the turkey was popped into the oven. In walks my 23 year old cat, named Bob, he has bad vision these days but, he still recognized the bird. Either that or the smell... but, it wasn't baking yet. He stopped walking in his tracks, he looked up at me, saying, OH MY GOD A TURKEY! and, he thanked me over and over. The last I saw of him, he was still sitting by the oven with a big smile on his face.

I'm thankful for making it to age 68.

I'm thankful that finally an increasing number of Americans are starting to understand our present political/economic situation and doing something about it. It gives me a bit of hope that I may be wrong but I'm afraid it's too little too late and many of us won't survive what I think is coming.

Among other things I'm thankful for, I'm most thankful that that hasn't happened yet and that I am able to continue preparing for it.

Gary, this is probably one holiday that isn't about politics. Thankfully, their is one.

Let me tell you about a man I met in the supermarket yesterday. I was telling Terry about this and was laughing about it.

I was getting a can of coffee when I noticed an older man was looking through coupons. So, I said, to him, " I got an extra one for a buck off of any Maxwell house, and while extending it to him, I said, " do you want it, take it." And, he said, " oh, thank you, that is mightly nice of you, you know I will be 100 in 2 days."

He looked great, was sharp as a tac, clean as a pin, nicely dressed and, I told him, "WOW, God bless you! you look wondeful." He went on saying, that he is still driving and can legally drive until, 102.

I asked him, "what is your secret, you got to have one?" He looked at me, saying, " I have laughed most of my life, always laughed... and while looking at me, looking at me.. lol, added, " I had lots of sex!"

I was still smiling and laughing when while driving home I noticed my aged neighbor walking to my mailbox. I parked the car and said to him, " you the mailman today?" He started laughing and handed me my mail, which was a bill... I said, " nah, I don't want that one."

He asked me how I was. "Fine, I am fine, how are you?" He went into how getting old sucks, he is 84, or 86, and, for some reason, I started telling him about the nearly 100 year old man in the supermarket.

When I told him this man's secret, he said, " I want to live to be 100, too... and with this little shine in his eye, he said, " I think I will go see what Margaret ( his wife) is doing."

ha ha ha ha, I walked into my house, talked to my 2 cats, and knew... I was doomed. ;)

So all along the secret to living long is to laugh and have sex. No politics, that stuff will kill you.

I will keep that secret in mind.
It's not going to do me much good today though.
I will be seeing kids, grandkids, a sister and some brothers, thier spouses, some neices and newphews. and my 93 yo mom. She's making it to 100 sans sex, but does a lot of reading.
We had a couple of inches today in Seattle, and I guess it looks more like Christmas then Thanksgiving.
Some of my family comes from the East Coast a long time ago. Miles Standish is one that sticks out in my mind. \
My son Taylor is here from Boston this week. It's been a while since I've seen him. He's been at wentworth institute of technology.
So I'm looking at football today and maybe board games later with family.

Thank you for this forum and all the good folks who hang out here!

We are having a low key holiday, as we are packing bags and double bagging all the food in the house....the condo building is being tented for termites next week. We wil be on a mini-vacation in a hotel for 4 days! Big pain, but is just a fact of life in Southern California.

Terry, your son should check out the plumbing museum http://theplumbingmuseum.org/hours_and_directions.html Watertown is a short subway ride out from downtown Boston.

In the Tea Party view of the holiday, the first settlers were actually early socialists.

These guys are such a joke! As are all those that support them.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

I have yet to eat my "socialist" dinner. Ha!

The correct version of this happy tale is the following:

The British settlers who had arrived in the New World on the Mayflower in 1620 were celebrating the next year’s good harvest in good ol' English style, sharing in the bounty with Squanto and their other Indian friends, who had taught them how to hunt and farm on new terrain. As English people do. Just getting along with other people, helping everyone out and looking after the land.

This all changed a few years later when one of them wanted to be King.

His Majesty Washington.

Things have never been the same since. But the English are still celebrated for which we give thanks.

She is lovely Ian. Really. Funny, Princess Di and I were both married the same day, and had our kids strangely, on the same day. This amazed us.

Terry, you might think it is without, lol. My kids think I am the virgin mary. :) and only play Bingo.

I had a good dinner with the boys, it was fun. My grandson is especially a delight. He is just about the cutest thing I ever laid eyes on. I asked again, if I can have him, lol. But, after a while I had a hard time holding him due to my arm problem. My right arm is about 75% useless. I want to grow a new one. So, it is back in the compression wrap, and sling. It's not that bad.

I love the Muppets! I had to sign what they were saying years ago to a bunch of kids, and believe me, that was the hardest thing to do, cause I was laughing.

Gary, this is probably one holiday that isn't about politics. Thankfully, their is one.
Ah but... the political lesson learned by the Pilgrams but not spoken about in history books helped to build America. It was the failure of their communal living (communism) for their first three years while more of them died of starvation than the half of them that died in their first year.

After 3 years of growing their food on a communal basis, with some of them choosing not to work to grow food, the colony was failing. Then the leaders allowed those that wanted to work to keep more of what they grew than those that didn't work, and that saved the colony. Prior to that, those people didn't like working hard to give those that didn't want to work the same volume of food that they were given. Once they were allowed to keep more of what they grew, the colony prospered.

To me that makes this holiday as important politically as the 4th of July.

Recently the US has turned from capitalism to State Capitalism, formerly known as national socialism which came out of communism. All of Europe is going broke due to socialism and severely cutting their 'free' services (government spending) while becoming very fiscally conservative trying to survive; and that may not succeed. Personally I don't think it will and I think we are heading for a very deep depression and I don't see anything being done to prevent that. I see things being done to cause that.

ps. I won't be living to 100.

Your historical facts are wrong Gary. The pilgrims were practising communal farming at the time of the feast and did not give it up until years later.

The current crisis in Europe, that started here, really shows that the profit motive has become slightly outmoded, and must be complemented by the incentives of the welfare state. Your traditional system of individual freedom alone is incapable of solving the complex problems of the 21st century. If you want proof, look at the value of my house. It has dropped by one-half and is continuing to fall. And my salary has hardly increased in two years. This cannot be termed success by any measure. Perhaps your pocket book is doing better. I hope it is.

The housing market went bust here, under Republican free market policies, and everything has imploded.

Helping to meet the material needs of the the free men and women of this country through the full power of centralized government is now the only way to go. With nearly 10% unemployed as a result of the Bush recession, what other choice do they have?

We have so many people who can't see a fat man standing beside a thin one without coming to the conclusion that the fat man got that way through his own hard work. So they are going to solve all the problems of human misery through less Government. Well, now, if Corporate America had the answer and we've had decades of it, shouldn't we expect it to read the score to us once in a while? Shouldn't they be telling us about the increase each year in wages? The reduction in the need for public housing and unemployment benefits? It's not happening. Wages have stagnated and the jobless are going up.

Washington D.C. is the answer. And the people that work there are very very nice.

Yes Ian, we both agree that the Pilgrams had to stop the communal living and go to capitalism to survive. There was no government then nor any of the modern things our federal government says we require today, and that we can not pay for.

The dems have controlled congress something like 50 yrs out of the last 60 yrs, and presently since Jan 2007.

For those that don't like politics... politics controls every part of our lives. To pay no attention to politics is dangerous to your way of life and that prevents you from being prepared for the changes that are coming that will change our lives for the worse and forever.

The problem is that too many people don't see what is happening and by the time they do, it will be way too late to do anything about it. I believe we may be past the point of no return already. If I'm wrong it won't harm you at all, if I'm right, you being unprepared will make your life much harder and you may not survive for very long.

We are monetizing our debt (instead of seriously cutting spending). If you don't know what that means and what that leads to, you should read up on it.

I owe much more than I have in the Bank. So bring it on.

If the value of the dollar goes down, then so does my debt.

And house prices would go up too.

I would not want to be a saver right now though. And the last thing you want to be in is gold. When that bubble goes, there will be another mess.

I wouldn't worry too much about America's debt. You don't owe that much, at least relative to your size.

But you do spend too much on the police and the armed forces. I'd cut veteran benefits right away. They're squeezing the system.

I have never been to a country where ex-servicemen drive such nice cars.

I wish I earned as much as a retired vet. Being in the army here is a good job if you can get it. Especially when you leave.
