I have the gray PB pipes and need to transition to PEX.

The Polybutylene to PEX adapter fitting comes with a copper colored crimp ring for the PB side and a black crimp ring for the PEX side.

Can I use the same 1/2" rental crimp tool (which says its for PEX) for both rings or do I need a PB crimp ring tool as well?

I have had different answers from different people and would like clarification.

Thank you.

Why are the crimp rings different? They look to be the same size & thickness.

What would happen if you used a black one on the PB side or the copper colored one on pex?

There both copper and the same size. Don't know the reason why one is painted black. I guess it's so the can call it a PEX ring instead of a POLY ring.
