Right now, I have a swingset that rests on grass and worn spots that get muddy every time it rains. I want to remove the grass from around it and fill it with wood chips.

My question is: is there some material that I have to put down below the wood chip layer such as stone or a barrier of some kind to restrict the regrowth of the grass or will the wood chips be enough?

Generally, a layer of weedblock fabric would do the trick. This is like a plastic, but it "breathes" and allows water to pass. you get it at HD or any garden shop
