Thread: Shower base re do

    Default Shower base re do

am replacing a fiberglass shower base and am wondering how one removes the old drain from the PVC pipe it is attached to. This is a +30 year old installation and there is no nut securing the drain to the shower base. It appears as though the original drain has simply been forced onto the PVC drain pipe. Is the solution to cut the pipe and reinstall to the original height using a coupling? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes. Use a inside pipe cutter with an extension coming out of your drill and this will allow you to get the base loose, then cut the pipe lower and use a coupling to refit the new shower. Use mortar as a sub base before setting the new one.
