serializing a 40 gal water htr to a existing 50

Hi,

Because we sometimes run out of hot water ( this a small 4 unit apartment building and sourced by the 1 - 50 gal htr. I already have a recirculation pump on the 50 and don't think doing a parallel water heater connection would be best because of the pressure differences introduced by the re-circulation system. This Recirc system was added later and was never necessary to add prressure to the system ...just keep the water in the pipes constantly heated

Here's my Question : in my proposed serial connection the source "cold" will go to the new 40 , then I will serialize it to the 50 which sits just 3 feet away ....the outgoing hot water connection from the 50 to the rest of the building will stay the same.

Will I have a problem with "lost" water pressure as a whole given the introduction of this addition 40 gallon tank?

IT is the ONLY way you can pipe your two heaters together, since they would definitely be different models even if the sizes were the same. You do not "lose" anything by connecting them that way, and it is my preferred method for ALL multiple heater installations.

If there seems to be reduced water pressure while running the hot water check the water ways inside of the dielectric Unions, if that is what you have. Often they are rusted to a smaller inside diameter and I have seen it to where they have rusted totally closed. For optimum flow use brass nipples with copper or brass FIP connections to them and forgo the steel dielectric unions...
