    Default Ash doors

This is a technical question, so I assume it won't get many answers.

My old ash door (in my basement, near the bottom of the chimney, once used to empty ash from the fire that had been put down the ash dump) had rusted so much that when I prodded it with a crowbar it fell straight out and broke up into dust.

    I want to replace it.

I have two choices: cast iron and cast aluminum.

    What's the difference?

No Mr Orange, I meant for the specific use in an ash door.

When should one use a cast aluminum ah door over a cast iron one?

    And vice versa.

Oh, I just wanted to answer the direct question with lmgtfy.com, I love that (those) answers.

My experience with chimney stuff is limited to cast iron, sorry.

To add: I think the aluminum will dissipate the heat faster than the iron but the iron may last longer but that is a guess.

There is no heat down there, and I presume no hot ash or debris. Go for the aluminum.

    Thanks Jimbo.

    May I ask why?
