We share our well with a neighbor at our mountain cabin. He lives there year around, while our place is used only on occasional weekends.

The line to his house has broken several times (underground) and when it does it causes the well to run continuously, sometimes for days, as he travels frequently.

Is there a device that we could install (with his permission, of course) that would shut down the flow to his house in the event of a broken line/high flow?

I know the best solution is for him to replace his entire line (several hundred feet of black poly), but we've been unable to convince his to do this.

Thanks.....

Yes, there is one pump and the line has a tee that feeds his place. Thanks,

In that case the answer is not easily. You would need a low pressure switch and a solenoid valve to shut off the water to his house only.

Without knowing more about the instillation it's hard for me to give you an exact solution, however from what I am seeing it seems pretty simple to me. Install a Square D pressure switch with a low pressure cut out (FSG2J24M4CP 40/60 Low pressure cut-off). It will give you a 40 lb cut on and a 60 lb cut off pressure. When a line breaks and the pressure drops to 20 lbs the switch will cut the pump off. When the problem is fixed all you have to do is hold the lever up on the pressure switch until it reaches 20 lbs then everything is reset. It's quite simple. Keep in mind though the leaking or busted line would need to leak enough to cause the line pressure to drop to below 20 lbs.

The Square D pressure switch can be purchased from almost any Well Supplier for about $25.00. You can possibly purchase it on line as well.

There are other solutions but they become more complicated!

I am assuming the pump is a submersible and not a jet pump! If it's a jet pump you could have seperate pumping system for each house.
