I have a Macclean model # NSM1001 water softener and the pressure tank is leaking around the threads on the top of the tank. Do i have to replace the tank or can it be repaired? Being just after Christmas I am trying to do this as economically as possible. I switched on the bypass and unplugged the softener to stop the leak until I can repair it.....HELP PLEASE

I have seen tanks crack in that area before. You should drain the pressure off, remove the head and inspect the tank very carefully. If it's cracked you will need to replace it.

Is this something I can do myself? How do I release the pressure in the tank before removing the top assembly?

I teach my customers how to do it all the time. Put the control valve in the backwash position and let it backwash 3-4 minutes.

Then put the by pass valve in bypass and then put the control valve in the backwash position. That relieves the pressure and fluffs up the resin so it will come out of the tank easier. And you have water in the house if needed. You will need water to get the resin out of the tank and with the pump shut off as has been suggested, you would have none....

I don't think at this point he wants the resin out of the tank. He just wants the valve head off so he can inspect the tank threads. But even if the tank is cracked, I would replace tank and resin at the same time.
