I was told by my son in law that the thermal expansion tank can be on the cold or hot side of a water heater. However I have not been able to verify this. Can the thermal expansion tank be located on the hot water side?

The one I put in my house, the instructions said to put it on the cold side.
Why? I dunno, maybe the rubber inside would get too soft in hot water?

tank

If it were not for the possibility that valves might be closed the expansion tank could be installed anywhere in the system. Hot water is a bit more agressive so it should be on the cold side.
