I have found excellent advise about purchasing toilets here, but I didn't find much on water softeners. I am finding so much contradictory information on-line that its hard to know what to do. I know that different models can support different hard water, but is there a brand or company name that you like to advocate for purchasing a water softner? Or at least some you would recommend that home owners might stay away from?

Also, what is your opinion about magnetic water softners?

Just looking for water softener advise. :) Tim

I've got one you can have for about 2 grand; I'll throw the bridge in for a bargain $500 extra!

Or, to put it another way, if you could make a magnetic softener and PROVE that it softened water even a little, it's Nobel Prize time for you!

Justalurker, had a bad experience , huh??

Just a lurker,
sounds like you got yourself a real good screwing
by some water softener company,

havent ya???

It amazes me how many peopel call me to ask me
to install some piece of junk they bought from
home depot, lowes sears, SAMS CLUB ect.....

and you cant talk them out of it...and I tell them NO THANKS
I dont want their business....

Then after youwarn them ,
they pay around 450 for a piece of junk, then another
200-50 to get it installed with absolutely NO WARRANTY
from the installer....

if people would just check the BBB and compare prices from
local family owned dealers they would avoid a lot of greif..

you can usually get a good unit installed from Aqua-systems
for about 875.00 - 925.00 with a good warranty but
everyone wants the bottom dollar price and
usually lives to regret it.
They simply WONT LISTEN to me ...

as you said...
the biiterness of poor quaity (and poor support) lingers ...
... long after the sweetness of low price are gone

they bring it on themselves.

Softeners

I think the Fleck. valve is about as good as you can get. The last I knew, it was used by more than one brand named softener.
Think less of the brand name and look closely at the working head.
Gary has a lot of good information.

Just remember that the softener is only as good as it's valve.
