will having an oversize motor on a submersible pump cause any electrical problems in your system?

i have some old pumps but only 1 good motor and control box to suit it.Wondering if i could put smaller pump with 12 stages on that motor wich would normally have 17 stages.

Nothing wrong with the motor being oversized, it will just run cooler. However, you can't go the other way around, it won't work if the pump requires more horse power than the motor has.
