How do I turn this valve?

This valve needs to be turned to shut off my main water valve but being cautious I don't want to bust it by guessing incorrectly.

Turn it 1/4 turn. When the bar is 90 degrees to the water flow, it is off. Same for gas meters. A good sized adjustable wrench works well. Usually these will turn either direction.

Uh oh. Thats a FORD valve....you might have to get a special tool that costs $100 and ONLY fits that valve. That might fix the problem. //sarcasm.

Like Gary said, a nice crescent/adjustable wrench will do the trick, 1/4 turn style. It is copper though, so it wont take a beating if you really lean on it.
