Smallest Shower & Toilet possible?

I am building a shop and need just a toilet and shower in a bathroom. The sink is going to be outside the bathroom. What configuration would you go with to use the least square footage? Thanks and any drawings would be great.

The plumbing code will dictate the size of your shower. The following is from the Illinois plumbing code. It would be best if you checked with your local codes for shower compartment sizes.

Dimensions. Single family shower compartments or stalls shall have at least 1,024 square inches outside dimension (O.D.) floor area and shall be at least 32 inches in shortest outside dimension. All other shower compartments or stalls shall have no less than 1,296 square inches outside dimension floor area and shall be at least 32 inches in shortest outside dimension.

Before any advice can be given, the State the work is being done in must be mentioned.
The United States has a certain way of doing these things.

It does not matter if you are in the country or a big city. There ARE PLUMBING CODES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED!!

Every State, county, township and city has a plumbing code they follow. If your area does not have its own code then they would follow the county code, if the county does not have one then it will follow what ever code the state follows. There are not if ands or buts about it.

Then why not just put a floor drain in a room big enough for just a water closet on one, with the shower valve right on the opposite wall with the shower head coming from the ceiling, kind of like a camper bathroom?

I was thinking about a swanstone floor pan and then using backerboard and tiling up the wall and then a toilet facing it. However his would need 32" wide by about 6.7' long space for the toilet and shower. Is that the best utilization of space?

You won't find much help here to do any plumbing that does not follow code. Codes are not in place to create hardships or extra work for homeowners or plumbers, but are to insure the health of your family and community is not put at risk and that it functions properly. If you someday desire to sell your home, there will be an inspection prior to the buyer received a loan. Anything that does not meet code will have to be brought up to code before the loan is approved. There can also be fines.

You may live where permits are lax, but EVERY state and county in the US has a plumbing and building code.

Showers have been described. Toilets must be centered in an area at least 30" from wall to wall, and there must be 24" free floor space in front of the toilet. This boils down to needing 2½' X 5' for the toilet. Add the 32" for the shower, and roughly a 5' X 5' space could be made to work.

Anything smaller than these measurements is very uncomfortable to use, which is why there are codes. If you chose to build otherwise, then the folks who have to use it are the ones who suffer.

In this case the plumbing codes are to provide a USABLE shower and toilet. You can make them smaller, but you will live with the cramped space "forever". Why do people insist that "codes" and "inspections" are there just to make life miserable for them?

Frankly, if you want advice on plumbing for the Third World, with no inspections, you are in the wrong place.

What state are you plumbing for?
So we can give the correct advice for plumbing that meets USA codes.
Without that, the thread will be pulled.
