Space Needed to Lift/Remove Tank Lid On Toto UltraMax II (Gwyneth 1-piece)

Hi. I want to buy a one-piece Toto UltraMax II to replace an old toilet that sits under a narrow ("banjo") extension of a vanity countertop. I need to find out whether a 1/2" clearance is sufficient to lift and remove this toilet's tank lid when necessary. There's a fraction more height under the countertop but its outer edge is 29 1/4" high. The toilet's height is 28 3/4" so I know I'm cutting it close. But in the diagrams it looks like the lid slopes and does not have much of a lip, so it could work albeit a little awkwardly. I'd appreciate advice on this. Thanks. SusanS

You can probably get the lid off, but you probably won't have room to get your hand in there to replace the flapper valve (which is the only normal service you should have to do).

Thank you, JadNashua. Good point! How much clearance would you suggest I have in order to replace a part within the tank? Any other toilet you'd suggest for great water-saving and good looks (sleek and contemporary). I am VERY disappointed about not being able to use the Ultramax II, as I've read very positive things about it. Plus it qualifies for a $150 rebate in my water district.

Comfortably you would need a least 4", you could struggle with 2 to 2-1/2" if your arm is skinny like mine.
I measured the UltraMax II in our showroom and without the lid it's 27" high.
It may be difficult to replace the parts inside but not impossible.

Keep in mind you also need some vertical space to lift the toilet over the bolts to anchor it. You may not get it in place without more room. If you can, if you are willing to remove the toilet, you could then make any repairs needed, then reset the toilet with a new wax ring.

I appreciate all the info on possible problems with the limited space. As much as I want to get the Ultramax II, I don't think we want to take a chance. (At least my husband doesn't.) Is there a shorter, high-efficiency toilet you would recommend? Otherwise, I will have to wait for future toilet options or until I'm able to replace the vanity and counter in that bathroom, which probably won't be anytime soon. I was told locally (that is, here in Berkeley, California) that Toto would likely be modifying many of its other toilets in the next 6 months to meet new water-use restrictions on toilets. You can go with the MS864114E 1.28 gpf Eco-Supreme it is 23-1/2" high and has the same Map test as the Ultramax II.

or you can go with the MS864114L 1.6gpf Supreme ADA if you want the Handicapped height it has a 25-1/2".

California is going with the 1.28gpf, not sure if they will be going any lower, i know Toto is changing most to the 1.28gpf as their standard.
