For inside your home. Do they "sit" on a platform under the floor, or "hang" by the lip from the surface they are installed in?

The ones I've seen do both. Sit on a ledger and have a built up area underneath. The best bet would be to select one and look up the installation.

Unless it is CI (and even there, it's not a bad idea and may still be required), the tub must be supported underneath; the ledger for the edges just keeps them from bending if you sit on them. Depending on the model and brand, it may come with a fully supported flat base, or it may only have some feet. You must read the installation instructions, and if it says it is optional to embed in mortar, you want to do that. Any tub that can flex will last much longer if you fully support the bottom.
