We are doing some repairs and we have thought we had 1" pipe however, we seem to have a pipe that is between 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" - is that possible? Is it possible that it is schedule 80 or something that makes it a tad bigger than 1 1/4"? It is not itself a coupling, but we are scratching our heads here...

scheule size pipes are all the same OD, and vary by wall thickness and ID.

Are you measuring OD or ID to evaluate the pipe size??

PVC pipe or poly pipe? There are size standards other than IPS, which is what the PVC you'll encounter is manufactured to.

Well we haven't actually measured, but the 1" collar/union doesn't fit over it. We have tried a 1.25 reducer and a 1.5 reducer and they don't fit either (too small and too large)
On other factor -this is the main pipe from the sprinkler shutoff to the valve box.

Come back with better photographs. Dig out more dirt from around the problem area. There are no shutoff valves that I know of, connecting to PVC pipe, that are not IPS standard.

If it happens that you are looking at PEX tubing, then that's a whole other story.

Pvc

IF the "collar", whatever that is, was too small for a 1" pipe, then BOTH 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 should have been too large. You are doing something wrong, or are giving us bad information. They do not make "in between" pipe sizes so you are measuring them wrong or are trying to use the wrong parts for whatever you are trying to accomplish.

Clean off the pipe. There might be some printed info on it.
Was the system installed commercailly? If it was, the pipe is very possibly black in color or less likely green or blue.
If the system was a do it yourselfer all bets are off. There is some pipe manufacted for ag aplications that don't match much of anything.
If possible bring a sample of the pipe to your local hardware store. They should be able to tell you what kind of pipe you have and maybe even give you some tips on how to repair it.
