shut-off valve

hope this dosen't sound dumb but what is the arrow for on a shut-off valve? have put them in b4 but never really took notice of arrow. thanks

Some shut off valves have a waste port so you can drain down the piping you just turned off. The shut off will still work if you install it wrong, but the waste port will be on the supply side and will be useless.
