What substance in well water causes a shiny yellow film in the toilet bowl from the water line down ?
Mine looks like that too before I flush!

Iron is normaly red but I bet it can leave a yellowish looking stain...
Any stain that is any of the following colors is most certainly from the presence of iron in the water:
red
reddish-brown
brown
yellow
orangy-yellow
The best way to remove a low level of iron is by using a water softner. Most water softeners will take care of about 2 ppm of iron. The best thing you could invest in at this point though, is a water test to identify the quantity of iron you've got.
