Finding Studs

Does anyone have trouble finding studs in a plaster wall? I have not had much luck in locating studs in my garage wall that is plaster. I have tried using a stud finder (ZIRCON) not having any luck, tried 16in. on center after finding one only through drilling small holes about every inch. I dont want holes all around the garage,does anyone have suggestions for locating studs in plaster? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

If they aren't on 16" centers, the studs may be on 24" centers. Give that a try.
