Well pump for Lake water supply

I am building a cottage in Ct. Water will be pumped from the lake for shower and sink. No water necessary for toilet.
1. Can a submersible well pump be used in a horizontal position or must it be vertical to function correctly?
2. Does a submersible well pump require a case or sleeve over it
to operate correctly?
I would like to set the pump 12" above the lake bottom.
The length of 1 1/4 pipe from pump to bathroom is 150'. The rise is approx.25'. Also a cartridge filtration system will be installed. Should the pump size be increased to compensate for the filter?

Yes it can be used horizontally. A sleeve is not necessary but a lake strainer will be. I use my lake strainers as a housing for the pump to keep minnows and leaves etc from plugging the screen on the pump. If your using a cartridge filter, put it after the tank and switch, never between the pump and the switch.

Which lake? If you dont mind me asking. Also, you are digging a trench for the power and water line correct?

In my opinion, a cartridge filter isn't good for anything. Unless it's large enough to do the job correctly. There are real cartridge filters that can be purchased and used, but you won't find them at any big box stores.

Small Lake is located east of Durham.
The pump was originally going outside the building. The design changed after the water line was installed. Its more practical to use a submersible well pump to avoid outdoor pump freezing.
To answer your question, no electric was installed in the waterline trench.
This creates a few questions.
1. What type of wire for under water application?
2. AWG size and conduit for water environment?
3. Grounding requirements
4. I assume GFI is required.
5. Required depth of conduit in soil?

Okay, you first...
#1, What size pump?
#2, run well pump wire, but exactly how how far and what is the HP of the pump?
#3, the well wire will contail the proper EGC (equipment grounding conductor) for the pump.
#4, no GFCI required,
#5, at least 18 inches. but why wasnt this buired with the well pipe?

Distance from electric panel to submersible pump 150' approx.
The horse power has not been determined, I assume it will be 1/2 H/P.
The system was originally designed to have a jet pump sitting outside the building in a small enclosure. For this reason no electric was installed in the waterline trench from the building to the lake.
