You can use a shop Vac (wet/dry type) to dig the hole down to the water level. Use duct tape to secure the flexible vac hose to a section of PVC pipe. I used a hack saw to cut "teeth" into the bottom end of the PVC. Turn on the vac and gently pound the PVC pipe into the ground to loosen up the soil at the bottom of the hole and the vac will suck the dirt right up and out. If you hit rock or clay or other hard stuff try digging another hole.
When you hit the water table the vac will not be able to dig deeper. That is when you put your metal well pipe and point in and pound it in as described above.
This can save you a lot of work and you won't have to drive pipe into any dry holes.
I used this method to drill my well. There was a water table pond about two hundred feet from my house so I know that there was water there. I started vaccuuming holes at my house and kept hitting clay until I was about half way to the pond where I was able to vaccuum down through sand all the way to the water table. Then I pounded the point down another 8'.
