Cable Drain Replacement

Contractor who remodeled our bathroom put in a very cheap PVC cable tub drain, very hard to turn, handle is plastic and comes off in your hand when you turn it, etc. Pretty sure they just bought the cheapest thing available at HD.

Wondering if anyone might have view on how big a job it is to replace with something better?

Is there access from under the tub via a basement, crawlspace, ceiling on the floor below? Is there access from a wall in a room or closet behind the tub?

I'm not a fan of cable drains.

IMHO there is no better drain than this Gerber waste and overflow.

Wear is the problem with any cable drain. The degree of difficulty depends on what kind of access you have to it.

surprised if its wear, contractor just put in new one < 6 months ago. Think its just a piece o'crap...

Access is limited, probably involves removing recently done tile and backer on shower wall to access the tub drain. Shame since we just had whole bath redone...

That doesn't sound like the way I would gain access.

The wear in a cable drain is often the fulcrum that opens and closes the drain plug.
