Hi –

I recently purchased a new toilet (a complete toilet), brought it home and went to install it. The issue is when I went to install it, it appears there is not enough room to install it – the closet flange is too close to the wall. I am not familiar with solutions on this, but it looks like I need about 1.5 inches of space. The other issue is I just laid down cement board and travertine. I know, I know… Had I know about this before hand, I could have replaced the closet flange with an offset closet flange. And to be honest, I am thinking I have to rip part of the floor out and do that, but really sucks. I did try to change the flange a bit (extended the slots on the flange by a half inch or so and then use a large wax ring, but it did not work. In other word, it leaked.

Looking for ideas other than ripping up the floor. Things I have considered – notching out the wall, getting a new toilet, etc. Is there such a thing as an surface offset that could work?

Thanks for any ideas out there!

10" rough in?

Measure from the center of the toilet flange back to the finished wall. That will tell you the rough in dimension for your installation. There are 10" rough in toilets available in some styles. Most likely the one you have is the standard 12" rough in.

I have not seen a toilet in a box from any big box store that was worth anything either most have a rather anemic flush of about 150 - 250 Grams of solids per flush. You should read Terry's consumer report on low flow toilets and get one that won't need plunging often. Return the junk to big box!

This may be your lucky day! If it had fit, you'd be stuck with it when you found out that it was Big Box Store junk. Take it back and find a Toto. Unfortunately, a 10" rough-in limits choices in models, but unless you go to the expense of changing the rough-in distance, that's what you're faced with.

Measure the rough in carefully. The 12" rough Toto Drake will fit down to a 10 7/8" rough in.
