When my kitchen faucet is used the water kind of pauses for a split second and makes a "thunk" sound. The inspector noticed it when I bought the house and called it a hammer. What is causing it and how do I fix it? In case it matters, I have well water.

IT may be the divertor to the sprayer (assuming you have one!).

It is usually very easy to replace. Technique depends on the brand/model of faucet. But I would first check for a leaking sprayer or hose... The diverter may just be doing its job.
