Old driven point well with new pump/tank not holding pressure

We recently purchased a camp and were unable to do a well test as the outside well (driven point) was in a small shed under 5 feet of snow. Once the snow thawed we were able to see that the pump had cracked off of the
water tank. Today our plumber brought a new pump and tank into the basement and they could get the system up and running but after several hours of work they weren't able to maintain water pressure- with the water running - there seems to be an air leak.

He thinks that either:

1)There is a crack in the underground line to the house. He noted that the 1 inch pipe inside becomes a 3/4 inch pipe in the well house - there may be a leak in the reducing fitting that is underground.

2) There may be a crack in the well casing itself. There is nothing visible nor could they hear any air leaks or air getting sucked in. The system holds water but they are going to go back tomorrow to check to see if the pipe is holding water.

Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas?? Just hoping that this isn't the start of money pit problems!
thanks,
Pam

If your saying that the pump used to be in the pit but now it's in the basement; so you mean to say that they used the old pressure line as the suction line??? Which was 3/4"? If so, that is a lot of the problem.

With the risk of ruffling a few Feathers, most Plumbers should not be working on Wells and Pumps. There are a few that do have the experience and many more who will take on the job but have no experience. This may be your biggest problem. Because if that's the case it's only going to get worse.

We see it all the time here. Mostly with Irrigation Contractors. They install a few Sprinkler Systems then all of a sudden they become Pump Professionals.

HI Bob- thanks for your reply-
We dug down to well house wall and found the connection where they had spliced the new 1" pipe from house to the 3/4" pipe from well with reduction connection and clamps that were loose. We connected new 1" pipe section to 1" pipe from house- fed thru the hole into well house and attached to top of well pipe. Now pump in house fills tank and holds pressure, but when we run water out of tank with a hose you can see air in the white plastic elbow that goes to the pump and the pump sounds sluggish...
any other ideas???
I am overriding hubby/plumber and calling well guy tomorrow...
thanks so much,
Pam
