Is there an ideal height to mount a microwave hood over a stove
Yes, and it'll be specified in the installation manual.

there is nothing better than the
manly smell of WD 40 in the air
while banging away on brass with a chisel and hammer...
it smells like......victory......
do not hit your thumb...

An "ideal" height would probalby be a few inches lower than the MINIMUM ALLOWED by code and the manufacturer. Check the manual for your microwave. It probably says something like 14" above the stove top.

14 inches!???!!?
Do you realize how low that is?
IMO 18" or higher.
If the question is can you mount a micro/hood where a standard hood was? IMO, NO. It puts the micro WAY too low.
I have seen this and IMO it is quite unsafe.
The upper cabinets for range hoods are 15"-18" tall. The uppers for micro/hoods are typically 12".

You're right....I pulled 14 out of the air. It would be convenient...but too low. I looked at mine, and it is 20". It went in where the buiilders range hood was orignally installed.
Almost all OTR micros are installed as replacements for original range hoods. This brings up some issues, because the micro is supposed to be on a dedicated circuit, which the range hood often is not. l Just a loophole, I guess!
The installation manual will give the MINIMUM distance above the range, and that MUST be followed even if the "convenient" height is less than that.
