Moen 87130 Chalet Cartridge Replacement

Hi Everyone,

My kitchen faucet is a Moen Chalet #87130 installed in 1998. The spout has been dripping slowly for a few months now. Today, I went to the Home Depot and picked up a new cartridge, #1225. I replaced the cartridge and now the spout drips even more. Depending on where the handle is turned, it is anywhere from a drip to a steady stream of water. There is no leaking around the base of the spout so I am assuming the o-ring gaskets there are still OK. I removed the new cartridge and replaced it 3 times now and still have the same problem. Is there anything else that can be causing the drip?

The handle also turns 360 degrees now. I don't think it did that before, but I could be mistaken. If it isn't supposed to turn all the way around, what prevents it from turning 360 degrees?

Take off the handle and push inward on the stem... See if the drip stops.

make sure the handle is place in properly. Sometimes misalignment of the handle will stop the cartridge from setting down to the fully closed position

The washer that goes under the handle is probably missing or, in the wrong place.

I did a job last friday involving a tub/shower valve with what's supposed to be a pressure balanced valve.


I brought up a posi-temp 1225B cartridge but this valve took a regular 1225B, which drew a red flag.

I took it a step further and removed the cover plate to see if it had the body of the older type Moen's which were straightforward and not real large.

The one I worked on had a huge brass body with a large screw type housing to the right, along with integral stops built into this assembly.

I'm "assuming" that what I was working on is a balanced valve.......No?

Moen tub/shower valves are rare in my neck of the woods so I was surprised that this faucet took a late 80's type cartridge that I know doesn't protect the end user.

The brass body of this valve probably weighs 4 pounds, that's how big it is.

The chrome sleeve on the valve that hides the cartridge assembly did have a set stop to allow the handle to move so far.....so I'm guessing that's the thermal stop setting.


I'm ready to take names and get a plumber in trouble if he got away with installing cheaper valve bodies knowing he could get it pass 2nd rough inspection. That can be easily done.

The lady did complain that no matter how low she sets the water heater thermostat, she can't get the water to a safe warm level; always too hot she said.


I'm lazy.....otherwise I'd be hunting the PDF parts explosion for this faucet to see what I'm dealing with. The cartridge replacement fixed the problem, along with me putting a PRV on the main line.......

That would be #3170 with diverter spout or #3270 w/push button diverter (without diverter spout). These are pressure balance . They are more expensive than the positemp. The large screw screw type housing is the balancing spool.

If the water is too hot, Replace the sleeve under the handle with a sleeve that has a set screw to allow the handle to stop sooner from the hot side

It was the #3170 then, diverter spout that was roughed in a 1/2" away from the tub wall for some reason.


I told the lady that if I didn't call back right away, it was my lack of experience with the specific valve that led me to believe that possibly the valve wasn't correct.

However I felt with a valve body that huge, it had to be a PB valve.

That was poor installation.

Loosen the screw under the spout (allan screw) and see if the spout can be pushed in towards the wall any further. Then refasten screw

Remember I stated Moen is #1 in customer service! That extends to their website. Go to this link and either plug in the part # if you know it or answer their questions about the faucet an you will zoom in on the specific faucet quicker than any other brand out there! Simply said Moen has it down pat!

Yes. The drip does stop. Any tricks on getting the handle on properly? I can get it lined up correctly with the valve stem and am able to turn it to hot and cold; I just can't seem to push it down enough.

You must not be engaging the handle correctly. But, unless this is a pullout spout faucet, which a Chalet should not be, then the handle ALWAYS rotated 360 degrees.
