I want to replace my Main Water Line myself. The current Line is 50+ years old and is galvanized pipe (3/4"). I Live in Southern Ca so frost is not an issue and the run is about 35' to 40'. I wanted to use copper pipe to match the pipe in the house. I heard that mixing galvanized with copper needs a zinc connector and do not see one in the original conection. To be safe should i install one at the meter since the city pipe is most likely galvanized. And in addition i was thinking of wrapping the copper pipe with something to increase its life. Any Sugestions? I see wrap on buried gas pipe and thought there was some material used on water pipe buried as well. Thanks

I think that our climate here is similar to most of CA, and I used (3/4" but go with 1" for more volume) PVC white plastic to connect our main water line from the meter to the house. No problems. I would go with that or PEX (which wasn't readily available years ago when I did it). Have copper supply lines in the house.
Good Luck!

I will remove all the galvanized line from the house connection to the meter at the street. House has copper at the shut off to all inside. I am most certain the meter has galvanized from it to the street city line.
