Interesting thoughts.

I've had a lot of success with the same Irwin auger bits. Lowes sells a pack that has an extender bit that works very, very well.

As for underpowered drills, I use a LiOn impact driver. It was one that came with the Makita drill I recently bought. So much easier than using a drill. You can hold it with your weak hand and not even notice how it is tearing through the boards.
