Pulling the pump

I have looked down my well shaft and see what looks to be a pvc fitting like an eblow that slides together about 5 ft down.The elbow goes out the side of the casing to the supply to the house I assume, it looks like it has like a key or slide on each side of it that slides toghether. There looks to be some kind of fitting on the top. Can anyone tell me exactly what it is and what I need to connect to it to pull the pump up. Pipe seems to be all pvc.

That is a pitless adapter. If there is a hole in the top of it, you screw a piece of 1" pipe in it with a tee handle on it to pull the pump but... It may be too heavy depending on the depth and size of the pump and drop pipe material.

If you lift it, since you say PVC, you must hold the weight while you unscrew the sections of pipe as they come up. If it is galvanized, you need a pulling machine or derrick truck usually. If it is PE pipe, you lay it on the ground away from the well.

Pulling a submersible pump can be a character building experience.

Gary pulled the pump today, wasn't bad only down like 70ft. The pump was plastic and had cracked at the top, by the looks of it it was due to there being no torque preventer on it (riser is PE) the fitting above the pump had marks on like it had been scuffing and like I said pump was crackedalmost halfway around the top and kicked. No I didn't do it taking it out lol. Thanks for your help though. Another question for you I have an awfull lot of sediment in the water when I started new pump up even though I left water running quite a while is this normal?

Torque arrestors are as much of a problem as none at all.

The sediment is due to you raising the pump and installing a new pump, run the pump untill it clears up, it will settle out in a couple of days.

Your silt is sediment and will clear as the well sits or you run off water.
