Older Kohler Rialto With overflow holes

Doing a new Bath for Customer . toilet choice kohler Rialto.

An older one elsewhere in home, has those overflow holes ,in back of tank

What was there thinking on them! Should I seal them ? If so , how?

if you use the retrofit rectangular flush valve, you should be ok. the san raphaels have the same issue and i've yet to have one overflow with my six units over the ten years i've had them. the circular flush valves were all replaced a few years back.

btw, it's the neck of the valve that is rectangular and much larger than the little tube that came standard on the original units.
