I am in a rental and I am a bit concerned about the toilet.

There is crack at the base starting from the floor that runs for a few inches. It doesn't reach as far as the bowl. However I did notice on each side of the toilet near the bolt that there is a grayish area under the vinyl flooring. I am wondering if something might be amiss with the toilet. It also squeaks when one is seated on the 'throne'. It is on a concrete sub floor.

What do you think? I have previously mentioned the crack to the landlord. Do you think it is sounding almost ready to 'go'?

It's really up to the property owner whether or not to replace it, and it seems like his standards aren't that high. Is the floor wet around the base of the toilet? If it's leaking out that crack, you would know it.

As for the squeaking, it's probably rocking a bit, which can be cured by shimming and caulking.

Speaking as a Landlord...PLEASE write him a note and hand it to him when you pay your next rent. It can't be a good situation and you don't want the toilet to fail because you're going to be the one with water on the floor. Also...you don't want him accusing you of breaking the toilet with a hammer because you got upset when he raised your rent ;)
