Well pump not working

I have a 63' well. (It is used for watering my yard only) The pump stopped working so I called a repair company. The tech said I need a new pump and because of the limited access it will have to be pulled by hand. He wants to charge me $1050.00 to install a 1 hp Sta-Rite submersible pump. Can any one give me some instructions for doing it myself? My son is an electrician so I have no worries about changing the unit out once it is topside.

That's a good price for the work he's going to do. But if you want to do this yourself, your going to have to give us more info on your well.

No offense intended, but just because someone is an electrician doesn't mean they know how to wire a pump. Anymore than I would know how to wire a home.

What do you need to know? It is a 1 hp sta-rite submersible pump. The well is 63' deep. It has limited ingress/egress so it will have to be pulled out by hand.

Is it on a pitless adapter? What material is the drop pipe made of? PVC? Galvanized pipe? What size?
Since your son is an electrician, you should have him check out the system before you pull the pump. There could be a problem in the control box (if there is one). He should be able to check resistance in the motor windings to determine if the motor is bad, etc.

The technician told me that the pump itself has gone out. He checked the wiring and the control box this morning. I am not sure what type of pipe was used. Is hand pulling the unit too big a job for the very handy homeowner? I have worked on just about everything around here and fixed most of my problems myself.

We can't answer this question until you tell us how the well is terminated and what kind of pipe it's hanging on. If you don't know the answers to these questions, we won't be very helpful.

I see a galvanized tee on top of the well seal (the red rusty thing). The well seal has four bolts with 9/16 inch heads. Loosen all four about two turns. No more. * Do not take them all the way out.*Cut the PVC pipe then start pulling on the tee. It could be PVC pipe under the tee, it's hard to tell, but with galvanized pipe it's going to be heavier. The well seal will come up usually when you get to a joint. Just juke the pipe up and down bumping the bottom of the well seal until it pops out. It has a thich rubber seal sandwiched between four pieces of metal, two up and two under. It's advisable to have something to slip under the coupling of each joint while you unscrew the pipes and take a rest. A plate with a slot cut in it just the width of the pipe works good. Cut the slot to the center of the plate and have the plate large enough to sit over the casing. The rest is just all muscle.
