We purchased a new GE 50 gallon gas water heater 2 years ago. We've noticed, while showering, that the water temperature fluctuates and we have to keep adjusting the hot/cold faucets. We do not run out of hot water; the temperature just will not stay the same. I drained it exactly one year ago. It is not making any loud noises.

We are not experiencing this problem in any other bathroom or sink and it is not related to flushing the toilet.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe the dip tube. Easy to check. It's a 5/8" tube with a flared end locater right under the cold water intake nipple. Remove the nipple and you can pull the tube out. It should run to the bottom of the tank. If it is broken, You're only getting hot water from the top of the tank. A new on costs about $6 at a plumbing shop. Box stores and hardware stores usually don't stock them because they don't sell that many. If this is the problem, don't worry about the broken piece, you can't get it out and it won't hurt anything.

But if the problem does not occur at any other faucet...

Could it be the water heater if the problem does not occur anywhere else in the house?

Thanks

The valve is the most likely problem, the dip tube shouldn't fail this soon, but is the easiest to check and eliminate.
