Please help - my toilets bubble when the washing machine is running

We just bought a one-story house. So the two toilets and the washing machine are all on the same level, of course. The toilets bubble up for about 30 seconds when the washing machine is run.

Would someone please explain to me why this is happening? I am worried that somethine is wrong with our plumbing system. Venting? Sewage? (By the way, I *have* noticed that some of our drains are a bit slow.)

Toilet bubbles

It sounds as though your drain is partly clogged. Get a professional to auger the drains and I think your troubles are over. Don't waste your time trying to snake it yourself, and more important, don't pour drain cleaning chemicals in to it. If you already have used chemicals, tell the plumber what you use, how much you used, and when you used it.

Thank you for the advice, Gary. I will call a plumber to get this work done.

By the way, I did in fact use some drain cleaner in the shower and the sink drains. Why is this not a good thing to do?

To pick up where Gary left off.
It is never a good idea to use any chemical drain cleaners, they rarely if ever work to correct the problem, can actually make the stoppage worse when the chemicals loosen up build-up on the piping before the clog, can damage piping (depending on the type of chemicals used), combining certain chemicals can be lethal, and the most important reason not to use chemicals is because the plumber now has to deal with a clogged drain line filled with who knows what.

Bubbling toilet

I had a rental house that did this. The bubbling toilet was my warning that the sewer pipe was almost plugged again. Ignoring the warning induced a backup into the house...

Ultimately it turned out that the pipe to the street was broken and had settled..

The line from the house to the street is your problem whether it is clogged or broken.

If you are on a septic system, it might be time to have it pumped.
If the water level in one toilet raises when another is flushed there is blockage somewhere.
