I have stripped the bathroom down to the studs. I plan to install a Swanstone shower base with Swanstone or other sheet type surround.

Is there any reason to use backer board products with this type of surround or is green sheet rock adequate?

Expense and labor aside, what is best for this application?

Thank You
Tom

Personally, I'd put in cement board. If it leaks at the seams, the greenboard is only marginally better than plain drywall. Both contain gypsum, which mold loves, whereas cbu doesn't support mold on its own, it takes something else contaminating it to support mold.

Thanks.

A lot of people recommend structolite for the mud base under the shower pan.
Is the gypsum content a concern?
