you hired a hack. Any decent company would have inspected the entire system upon completion.
why not post a picture or make/model of the valve. How can any one offer a defintive answer reading your non descriptive post.
In my opinion auto drains were never considered standard practice. They are a selling point only and a poor one at that.
Contractors should be selling exceptional designs.

Ideally you should replace with a PVB and add a blowout/drain...
I guess Illinois is different, but in the majority of the country a PVB is perfectly
acceptable as a backflow device for a residential sprinkler system.
PVB's have not been banned in most places for use on lawn irrigation.

Do not use auto drains. Your better off having the system blown out.
You need an Irrigation Audit. Where do you live? Send me a plane ticket and buy me a couple rounds of golf and I'll have your answer! :D

The clock can only operate so many solenoids at once. More than likely you are exceeding the output capability of the transformer.
Tip, when you replace, tighten the packing nut to each ball valve. Most of them leak ever so slightly new out of the box(contributing to the rusting handle), especially on febco's.
Hunter has spray head strip nozzle's (not the mprotator strips) that do 5'.
Its your lucky day George

Are you in freezing climate? What brand valve are you talking about?
Some solenoid/plunger assemblies retain water even if blown out/drained.
When the water freezes it distorts the...
