So I hooked up the sink and decide to see how the Noble Seal TS would work. Not fair if Schluter has a lock on this new niche market so I decided to check myself the exact thickness level difference between Kerdi and Noble Seal TS.
Here is what I have found to date.
It takes 14 layers of Kerdi to equal the thickness of my "Chubby". That is 5/16". Kerdi on their spec sheet shows Kerdi to be 8 mil (including the fleece) so if 8 mil equals 8/1000 of an inch it should take 39 piece of Kerdi to equal 5/16". Something is not right here.
Either Kerdi is thicker than they say or the measurement is not including the fleece. http://www.schluter.com/media/Waterproofing-ENG.pdf If you view the cross section at the above link Kerdi is clearly marked as measured with the fleece. So is Kerdi the waterproofing part only 1/3 of 8/1000 or 1/375" - Can't be - Can it?
I tested some Kerdi Band to see how it stacked up. Since Kerdi Band is sold as being 4mil (4/1000's of an inch) you could argue that it would take twice as many pieces to equal Kerdi. Guess what? It does not. At 4 mil I was only able to stack 16 layers under my "Chubby".
I tried the "Chubby" on the side (5/8") and managed to get only 30 pieces of Kerdi Band under my drain brace. I then cut out 30 pieces of Noble Seal TS. If Noble Seal TS is 30mil or (30/1000") 30 pieces should nearly be an inch.
Now 16 pieces of Noble Seal TS equals 5/8". So 32 pieces would equal 1 1/4". 32 x 30mil = 960mil plus the fleece which I worked out to equate to roughly 4.5 mil a side and you get this.
32 x 39mil = 1.248 mil or an inch and a quarter.
Assuming Kerdi uses the same fleece or similar product their numbers don't add up.
14 pieces of Kerdi at 8 mil = .112" at 8 mil but I measured .3125". I think Kerdi is thicker than advertised. I believe the Kerdi is 22.3 mil not 8 and this would be similar to the Kerdi they use overseas. Can this be right? Why would they sell it or advertised it as thinner.
Kerdi Band 16 layers heigh measured .3125". That equates to 19.5 mil each layer.
If we say that Kerdi is 22 mil with the fabric (it is I measured it) and that Noble Seal TS is 39 mil with the fabric (I checked that too) it is safe to say at the very least that Noble Seal TS is twice the product in thickness.
But what I want to know is how does Kerdi measure their stock and are they selling us the European product. Lets hope.

I always have and like to prove things to myself and understand all the pitfalls of a product or installation so I know all the steps not to do - and in learning this make my life a little less stressful.
Many of my flood tests are in some of Vancouver's nicest condo's and very very high up! When I go to bed - I sleep like a baby!!!

John, I was not talking about your diligence which is a rare commodity these days. I was just talking about splitting hairs on the spec WRT how the thickness was measured. The thickness of the fleece becomes imbedded into the mortar and so becomes part of the mortar's thickness except for that which is overlapped, so trying to measure the fleece is somewhat academic.
