The townhouses in our complex use a vertical shiplapped wood siding. When installed, they nailed most of the stuff directly on the plywood siding without a housewrap. The also didn't prime the back, so when moisture gets back there, they warp, nor do they seal well at all. My preference is to reside with something else, maybe a shingle from James Hardie, but that is down the road.
The contractor has been going around repairing rot for our painting cycle. He suggests caulking the edges of the warped boards to try to limit moisture intrusion, at the cost of about $3k for the first three buildings.
My quesiton is: Will this be better or worse for the structure while we accumulate enough money to re-side the buildings (big $$$) in a few years.
