My buddy Tom called me today to wish me a happy Father's Day and ask for some advice. I was heading to work for a short spell and after hearing about his shower leak I told him I would be by in an hour. I helped Tom build his shower and wanted to see first hand the problem. I picked up my new Laticrete 5"x5" tile insert drain yesterday from my local supplier - here in Vancouver. The drain is neatly packed into on box that includes the bonding flange and tile insert section. Like a Kerdi drain from Schluter the drain is available in either ABS or PVC and I ordered the ABS since most Vancouver installations use this black plastic piping.

I was asked to clean up a two bedroom condo up in Whistler not far from my North Vancouver home this week and thought I would share this process with anyone keen enough to tackle the cleaning job of a Schluter Sytems Kerdi drain. The strainer portion of the Kerdi drain comes off easily with just a philips screwdriver unless the tile setter grouted the screws over like the one I worked on.
To access the screws first I used the tip of a sharp drill bit to loosen up the dried grout.

In trying to find the best "Latex Primer" for my "Kerdi over drywall" installation guide I have come up with a few road blocks. I checked with Schluter and managed to get not a product specifically as a recommendation - but I was told that Mapei and Custom Building Products make latex primers that I could use with Kerdi installations over drywall compound.
I called Mapei and they do not recommend drywall in showers and said they have no product they recommend
